Do you have a plan for the care of our sun damaged skin?

We left behind a beautiful sunny holiday, we made memories, we spent happy time with our loved ones, we rested, sunbathed, got away from the stress of daily life, lived the moment and how quickly it passed. Finally, we started the busy work tempo. So, do you have a plan for the care of our sun-damaged skin? If you don't have a plan yet, we can give you some suggestions.

Protecting from the sun is of course an important thing to do, but the thing to keep in mind is that no sunscreen provides complete protection. In addition to the factor of the sunscreen applied, the degree of sun damage can be reduced by the amount and frequency of application, and additional measures to be taken such as not being able to go out during peak hours of the sun, wearing a hat, and staying in the shade. Despite this, we can never talk about one hundred percent protection. Post-holiday sunburns and skin dryness are among the most common problems.

The first thing to be considered in the care after sunburns is to protect the area from the sun with more care so that the damage does not deepen. The process should be supported with epithelial and tissue regeneration creams. Applications such as hot shower, sauna, Turkish bath, massage, scrub and spa should be avoided until tissue damage is completed. If the burn is severe and widespread, do not neglect your dermatology examination.

The contribution of the sun, sea and pool is usually great in skin dryness after vacation. In these cases, avoiding the scrub and applying moisturizers while the skin is moist after bathing provide longer and more effective moistening.

Since it is known that sun damage on the skin spots will cause the spots to increase with the cumulative effect, you should use spot lightening creams with the recommendation of your dermatologist, without sacrificing sun protection. The point to be noted here is that spot lightening creams should be used very carefully during the redness phase when the spots first start to form. Since these creams themselves can cause some redness and peeling, intensive use can also increase tissue damage and cause more blemishes. These creams should be used at night, in very small amounts and should be applied only to the areas with spots. It should be cut as soon as it starts to form redness and used intermittently for a few days. In very deep and old sunspots, sometimes if there is no response with cream, prp (platelet rich plasma), mesotherapy, peeling, laser applications can be done for the spot.

One of the most common mistakes made by our patients with skin blemishes is skin damage caused by home peelings. Home peelings are applications that should be done very carefully. Because it cannot be predicted how deep the effect of products with unknown acidity and concentration (acid pH) will be when applied to the face. Since products such as lemon, vinegar, and lemon salt have a pH higher than the skin pH, their concentrations are not adjusted well and if they are applied directly to the skin without diluting them sufficiently, and especially if they are mixed with other acids, they can cause serious burns. It is safer for peeling peels to be done by professionals. Coffee is my favorite for home scrub. The antiaging effect of coffee is due to the antioxidants it contains. The vitamin B3 it contains is very effective in skin regeneration and preventing cancer formation. It is the most reliable and effective application for after-sun skin care at home. The first thing to consider when preparing a coffee mask is to know your skin. While masks that dry the skin are not preferred on dry skin, oil-based masks on acne-prone skin can increase your acne.

In our recipe for dry skin, 1 tablespoon of coffee is mixed with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, then applied to the cleansed skin and left for 1 hour, then cleaned with warm water.

For oily skin, the same mask is applied by mixing 1 tablespoon of coffee with 1 tablespoon of milk. After waiting for 1 hour, it is cleaned. Afterwards, you can finish the process with a soothing cream that you will apply for your skin.

Thanks to the lactic acid contained in milk and yogurt, it not only provides a mild peeling effect, but also provides moisture to the skin, brightens the spots. The probiotics in it contribute to the treatment by reducing the number of other unwanted microorganisms on the skin in acne and rosa (rose disease). Milk and yogurt masks made 1-2 times a week thus contribute to your skin care from different angles. Here again, milk masks for dry skin and yogurt masks for oily skin may be more suitable.

In addition to your home care, do not forget to get information about your professional treatment options from your dermatologist for spots due to sun damage.

In addition, do not neglect the treatment in winter, as skin burns such as actinic keratosis, which develop due to ultraviolet (UV) damage from the sun, can be a precursor to squamous cell skin cancer. Another important issue that should not be neglected is your moles. It is possible that moles can transform into skin cancer called melanoma with UV rays. This issue is very important especially in individuals with a family history of skin cancer and white skinned individuals. An annual mole examination is routinely recommended. For those with a family history, it is recommended that mole screening be done by computerized photographing and recording systems.

Beauty and skin health should always be considered as a whole. Do not forget to get professional support from your dermatologist for your skin problems. Entrust your skin to your dermatologist. Together we are healthier and more beautiful.
