NAIL FUNGUS TREATMENT

Nail fungus treatment is a disorder with long-term treatment. One of the reasons for this is that when the toenails, which grow late, are damaged by fungus, they even grow in a longer period of time. Since the fungus is located in the nail and on the subungual tissue rather than on the nail surface, it is difficult for the treatment to reach these areas.

Although oral pill treatments are effective in treatment, liver functions may increase in long-term use. Since this situation may increase with some medications taken simultaneously, regular liver function monitoring should be performed, especially in those taking medications for cholesterol and blood pressure. Again, fungicides are not used in pregnant and lactating women. In such cases, alternative treatment options come to the fore.

Nail polishes are used 2-3 times a week by rasping the nail surface and applying it like a nail polish. Since the treatment with nail polish should last 3-9 months on average, this type of long-term treatment reduces the compliance with the treatment in patients. Most of the time, its effect is limited because it cannot reach under the nails sufficiently and fungal resistance develops.

With medical foot care, the thickened fungal nail is thinned with the help of special cutters, the fungus is cleaned mechanically and the nail fold is shaped. It provides a cleaner and smoother growth of the nail and the opportunity to reach the nail polishes under the nail. In this way, patients do not need to take systemic treatment (oral pills) for a long time.

At the same time, nail fungus treatment with laser is among the alternative treatment options. It is a painless application. It is applied in 3-4 sessions with 2-3 week intervals. The laser beams applied on the nail treat the fungus with the effect of heat. The most preferred lasers in this regard are Q-switched lasers. When these lasers see black and brown as the target chromophore, they are converted into heat energy. Thuss, the decaying and damaged tissue due to fungus is cleaned. At the same time, since the heat effect destroys both the fungus itself and the fungal hypha and spores that are resistant to treatment, they also ensure the permanence of the treatment. For the fungus that is settled on the subungual tissue, laser is preferred as an effective treatment option because it gives the opportunity to reach this area.

In our clinic, thickened and damaged fungal area is first cleaned via medical foot care mechanically with the help of cutters. The nail is thinned. Laser application is applied in the same session. Post-procedure treatment and care recommendations are made.

Breastfeeding is a preferred method in pregnancy and elderly patients, in order not to put a burden on the liver in the use of multiple drugs.
